Government’s Effort to Restart with New Relief Measures – Tensions Remain in ND Due to Doxiadis and Tsafos

The gaps and dysfunctions within the government became evident due to issues surrounding Aristos Doxiadis and Nicos Tsafos. Just hours after the swearing-in of new ministers, the government faced exposure, with its message for a restart after the reshuffle being overshadowed by the issue of the two deputy ministers (Aristos Doxiadis and Nicos Tsafos). This even detracted from the visit of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, where he announced that the positive trajectory of the economy would benefit citizens. New relief measures are on the table as the government works on a package to ease the burden on the middle class. Mitsotakis stated that revenues from combating tax evasion will either fund tax cuts or increase investments. Additionally, discussions include further reductions in social security contributions for workers and employers, and even the provision of the 13th salary for public employees this fall if state revenue forecasts hold true. The government aims to create a positive climate through these measures, providing a political ‘breath’ after a period of low approval ratings for ND, particularly due to mishandlings in the Tempi case. Internal tensions persist within ND over the appointments of Doxiadis and Tsafos, raising questions about vetting processes and loyalty to national causes.
