Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is set to host a high-level meeting at the Maximos Mansion on 29 June 2026 to address soaring living costs—particularly the prices of essential goods—and reinforce support for freelancers and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The gathering comes ahead of the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF or DEΘ), where Mitsotakis is expected to unveil a new package of economic support measures aimed at boosting household incomes.

A National Consensus on Essential Goods

Attendees include the presidents of key business associations: the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV), the Hellenic Food Industries Association (SEVT), and the Union of Supermarkets of Greece. The government’s goal is to forge a broad-based ‘social agreement’—a consensus among industry leaders—to lower shelf prices on staple household items.

Multi-Agency Coordination

Also present will be representatives from the Ministries of Finance and Development, the General Secretariat for Commerce, the Independent Authority for Consumer Protection and Market Oversight, and other relevant agencies. Discussions will focus on the latest price trends, current market conditions, the effectiveness of existing controls, and potential new interventions—including measures to strengthen competition and ease cost-of-living pressures.

Beyond Digital Tools

The meeting follows the recent launch of PosoKanei, a new digital price-comparison platform designed to empower consumers. While the government acknowledges the tool’s value, it also recognizes that technology alone cannot resolve deep-rooted pricing issues. Additional actions are being explored to curb profiteering and deliver tangible relief to households.

Accelerating Policy Delivery

With only a brief pause scheduled for mid-August, the government is fast-tracking the implementation of reforms and commitments. This push aims to bolster the New Democracy party’s core electoral message—‘We said it, we did it, and we’ll do even more’—ahead of Mitsotakis’s keynote address at the Thessaloniki International Fair.

Focus on Key Voter Groups

Special attention is being given to SMEs and self-employed professionals—a group representing over one million voters. In the 2023 national elections, this demographic strongly backed New Democracy; however, concerns about economic sustainability have since emerged, underscoring the political importance of targeted support ahead of upcoming European Parliament elections.
