Government Faces No-Confidence Vote: Mitsotakis to Outline Future Plans

The three-day parliamentary battle over the no-confidence motion against the government reaches its climax today, Friday, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivering his speech at midnight. Following the rejection of the motion by a united New Democracy Parliamentary Group, the path for a reshuffle officially opens. This move is deemed necessary to signal the government’s reinvigoration amidst growing public pressure due to recent controversies surrounding the Tempi tragedy. Advisors to Mitsotakis estimate that changes could be announced as early as March 14, a day after the swearing-in of the newly elected President of the Republic. Although the new cabinet structure is said to have already been finalized, the prime minister has chosen to align the ministers’ swearing-in ceremony with the start of the term of the new president, Kostas Tasoulas, who assumes official duties on March 13. The reshuffle is expected to be sweeping, disregarding geographical and party balance considerations. The new lineup will aim to implement reforms promised for the next two years leading up to 2027, focusing on immediate relief for citizens and improving the political climate. In his speech today, Mitsotakis will emphasize the government’s agenda for the coming period while highlighting past achievements across various sectors. He will also address current geopolitical issues post-Trump’s re-election and reaffirm trust in the judiciary regarding the Tempi incident. Additionally, he plans to discuss the blueprint for a new railway safety framework in collaboration with France’s state-owned rail company.
