Giorgos Papavasileiou Resigns as Nikos Androulakis’ Office Director

Giorgos Papavasileiou has resigned from his position as director of the office of PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis, following revelations of past social media posts praising Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his government. Posts from 2020 and 2021 revealed Papavasileiou lauding Mitsotakis, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, and Government Spokesman Grigoris Dimitriadis. In November 2020, amid incidents of university violence, he wrote: ‘Outstanding Mitsotakis, for tackling the fascist underground in universities with a left-wing mask.’ A former president of TSMEDE and PASOK parliamentary candidate (1990–93), Papavasileiou had replaced Elena Anastasiou in the role. In his resignation statement, he emphasized his lifelong commitment to PASOK since 1974, supporting all its leaders. He dismissed attempts to politicize old comments, stating that two posts from five years ago do not reflect endorsement of a government he now criticizes for corruption, institutional degradation, and deepening inequality. Calling Mitsotakis the ‘Prime Minister of wiretaps, scandals, and democratic erosion,’ he submitted his resignation to protect PASOK’s political struggle, which was accepted. He pledged continued involvement in the fight for political change.
