Giorgos Karameros, SYRIZA MP for East Attica and journalist, announced today (June 4, 2026) his resignation from the party and all party positions. He confirmed he had already informed SYRIZA leader Sokratis Famellos of his decision.
In a social media post, Karameros stated he will continue his political work as an active citizen within the progressive, social-democratic coalition that reflects his values — one uniting the left and political ecology. He emphasized his longstanding support for ELAS (United Left Alliance), the new party launched by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, calling its formation a source of renewed political prospect for Greece.
“This support remains — and is in fact strengthened — as a political assessment,” he wrote. “What I say, I do. I respect Parliament and its function. It is the heart of our democratic system.”
Karameros added that he will formally notify the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament by the end of this week. He also expressed gratitude to the citizens of East Attica who entrusted him with their vote.
His departure follows that of fellow SYRIZA MP Kostas Zachariadis, who resigned last Friday, declaring: “A SYRIZA running under a different ballot than Alexis Tsipras’s cannot be my party.”
Karameros, who entered Parliament in 2023 after a background in local government and political ecology, described his time in office as unexpected but steady. He stressed that his decision aligns fully with the people of East Attica and his family — the only privilege he claims is their trust.
“In my ethical code, words mean nothing without action that affirms them,” he wrote. “Consistency, credibility, and dignity are non-negotiable principles.”
He underscored that political power is not personal property but a public trust — and that returning his parliamentary seat to the party is his chosen minimum standard of accountability. “I am not abandoning anything,” he concluded. “I will keep fighting for this legacy — with respect for all, both new and experienced comrades alike.”
