Germany is experiencing wildly erratic weather lately—reminiscent of a Mediterranean climate—with scorching heat, torrential rain, hailstorms, and powerful winds all striking within the same period. The German Meteorological Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst) has issued warnings for exceptionally high temperatures, strong gusts, heavy rainfall, and even localized hail.
Record-Breaking Heat and Health Risks
In western and southwestern Germany, temperatures are expected to soar up to 38°C, while much of the rest of the country faces highs between 30°C and 35°C—accompanied by high humidity. The agency warns that ‘heat stress could pose a health risk’, especially for vulnerable groups, and advises increased water intake and keeping indoor spaces cool.
Storms, Delays, and Infrastructure Strain
At the same time, isolated but intense thunderstorms are forecast—including hail and wind speeds exceeding 100 km/h. These extreme conditions have already disrupted rail services. Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany’s national railway operator, canceled nearly all high-speed ICE train services between Hamburg and Hanover, as well as Hamburg and Bremen, due to lightning damage to signaling systems. Widespread delays have also been reported on other northern routes.
Vulnerable Groups in Focus
Verena Bentele, president of the German social welfare association VdK, urged special care for elderly and homeless people during this heatwave. In response, the German Red Cross has asked municipalities to open access to air-conditioned public spaces for those without shelter.
Ongoing Monitoring and Preparedness
State-level authorities are closely tracking the heatwave’s progression, with possible interventions under consideration for workplaces and schools to ensure safety and comfort amid the extreme conditions. The intense weather is expected to persist until mid-next week.
