Germany: Two Arrested for Sabotage Attempt on Warships in Hamburg – Greek Man from Komotini Among Suspects

German authorities, coordinated by Eurojust, arrested two suspects — a 37-year-old Romanian and a 54-year-old Greek man from Komotini — for allegedly attempting sabotage on German naval vessels in Hamburg. The operation, conducted jointly with Greek and Romanian law enforcement, uncovered plans to damage warships in 2025, including inserting over 20 kg of abrasive gravel into an engine, piercing potable water pipes, removing fuel tank caps, and disabling safety switches. Prosecutors warned that undetected, these acts could have caused severe damage or delayed deployments, jeopardizing Germany’s national security and NATO operational readiness. Searches were carried out in Hamburg, Romania, and Greece. Investigations into the suspects’ background and possible links to foreign interference continue amid heightened NATO alert levels across Europe over suspected Russian espionage and sabotage activities.
