Germany: Munich Airport Closes Due to Drone Sightings

Munich’s international airport was forced to shut down late Thursday night (02.10.2025) after multiple drone sightings in the area, leading to the cancellation of 17 flights and affecting nearly 3,000 passengers. A total of 15 incoming flights bound for Munich were diverted to airports in Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, and Vienna. The incident began around 9:30 PM local time (10:30 PM in Greece), when eyewitnesses reported drones flying over the airport vicinity. Approximately one hour later, the unidentified drones were spotted again—this time directly above the airport—confirmed by police spokesperson Stefan Bager to the newspaper Bild. As a precaution, airport authorities suspended all operations around 10:30 PM local time (11:30 PM CET), halting all takeoffs and landings. Notably, flight numbers are already limited between 10 PM and midnight to reduce noise pollution, and the airport normally remains closed after midnight. German authorities cannot yet guarantee normal operations resuming after 5 AM Friday. However, no further cancellations have been announced on the airport’s official website as of now.
