Germany: Cyprus a Better Mediator with Iran than Russia

in

German Foreign Minister, Jochan Wandtfohl, stated that ‘Cyprus is a more suitable mediator with Iran than Russia’ during his meeting with Cypriot counterpart Constantino Kombo in Nicosia on Monday (16.06.2025). Wandtfohl expressed confidence that Cyprus could play a mediating role to bring Iran back to the negotiating table regarding its nuclear program. The German diplomatic chief met earlier with his Cypriot counterpart and announced that Germany, France, and the UK will jointly attempt new negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program. Wandtfohl was cautious about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s offer of mediation and instead suggested Cyprus as a potential mediator. He emphasized the urgency for Iran to refrain from using nuclear technology for military purposes and warned that any withdrawal from the Non-Proliferation Treaty would further isolate Iran.
