The Federation of German Industries (BDI) calls on it not to proceed directly to countermeasures in response to possible tariffs from them, but to submit proposals for economic cooperation, as “there are still many opportunities for cooperation with mutual benefit”. “Many of Donald Trump’s announcements were expected. It wants to undermine the multilateral mechanisms and this challenges us, and it also affects international efforts to achieve the necessary and effective climate protection. We must therefore remain in dialogue with the United States, cultivate our contacts and develop a positive transatlantic agenda,” said BDI executive board member Wolfgang Nidermark and asked the EU to submit economic cooperation proposals. CORVERSE “Europeans maintain with the US the largest bilateral trade and investment relationship in the world, from which both sides benefit,” noted Mr Niedermark, while stressing that the European Commission has decisive responses to potential new tariffs on European goods and is able to launch countermeasures, but “this should not be the first reaction”, as “there are still many opportunities for closer cooperation with mutual benefit, particularly on regulatory issues, technical standards or durable supply chains.” Source: RES – ICM
