Gerasimos Papadopoulos on Crete Earthquake: ‘Unusual Activity, Not Normal’

in

The southern Aegean region, including Crete, has been experiencing a series of significant earthquakes recently. The latest seismic event occurred on Tuesday at noon (03.06.2025), prompting an interview with renowned seismology professor Gerasimos Papadopoulos on Cretalive. He discussed an earthquake that appears unrelated to previous ones in the area. According to Papadopoulos, this quake exhibits entirely different characteristics with a distinct epicenter. He reassured the public, stating that such activity is typical for the Cretan Arc and does not pose immediate concern. However, he noted an unusual surge in seismic activity over the past 20 days, as it’s uncommon to record three earthquakes of nearly 6.0 magnitude within such a short timeframe. Despite this, today’s tremor is not included in these statistics, referring instead to recent quakes near Kassos, Western Crete, and yesterday’s event near Rhodes.
