George Gerapetritis: There is no secret diplomacy with Turkey – Dialogue only for demarcation of continental shelf and AEZ

Information to the political leaders on 11 December. That is what the Foreign Minister said, speaking in Parliament’s plenary on Monday (25.11.2024). As George Gerapetritis added, during the discussion of a topical question by the MP of the Port of Freedom, Alexander Kazamia, on 12 December the Foreign Policy Council will meet for Greek-Turkish. Regarding his meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, the Foreign Minister noted that from the outset “we never had high expectations” and the goal was “to continue dialogue because it is in the country’s interest”. George Gerapetritis stressed that “the dialogue will not proceed on other issues, except for the two issues we recognise and these are the demarcation of the continental shelf and the AEZ alone” and added that “after the conclusion of this meeting it was found that there was a deviation.” The Foreign Minister pointed out that the government “is not possessed by slip syndrome” and assured that “we will never slip” from the national lines. He rejected the “secret diplomacy”, noting that the government has informed and informed the House and “government and Parliament we march together”. He expressed the belief that despite the disagreements with Turkey about the continental shelf and the AEZ, we believe and will continue to have an open political dialogue on the other issues because this is in our country’s interest and that there are no tensions in our neighbourhood. He pointed out that the open communication channel is beneficial and is proven by the fact of developments in the Cyprus issue, the management of migration flows, etc.
