Gavdos Island Declared in State of Emergency Amid Critical Shortages

The remote Greek island of Gavdos has been declared in a state of emergency due to severe shortages of food, medicine, fuel, and essential supplies following a prolonged maritime isolation. With no ferry service since January 16, 2026 — and only one small inflatable boat managing to reach the island recently — residents have been left without basic necessities for over two weeks. General Secretary of Civil Protection Nikos Papaeustathiou issued the emergency decree on January 20–21, 2026, citing extreme weather conditions including heavy rainfall and storm-force winds. The declaration remains valid until April 21, 2026. Mayor Lillian Stefanaki urgently appealed to the national government for immediate intervention and long-term solutions, stressing that recurring isolation threatens the island’s viability.
