Natural gas consumption in Greece has significantly increased this year. According to Green Tank data, the first nine months of 2025 recorded the second-highest historical natural gas consumption (51.3 TWh) since 2021. Demand specifically for electricity generation reached a decade-high, hitting 36.5 TWh, or 71% of the market. Overall natural gas consumption rose by 7.7% year-on-year, driven primarily by power producers (+10%) as well as households and businesses (+18%). In contrast, industrial consumption dropped by 18.4%. Unsurprisingly, gas imports rose by 1.9%. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) dominated the market, accounting for 44.1% of supply—a yearly increase of 81.1%. Meanwhile, Russian gas imports via Sidirokastro fell by 20.1%, dropping to second place with a 40.1% share. However, in September 2025, pipeline imports of Russian gas regained the lead with 2.51 TWh—up 53% from August. The last time Russian gas imports surpassed LNG was during April–May 2025.
