Galatsi: Plaster Falls in Primary School Classroom – Students and Teachers Lucky to Avoid Injury

Miraculously, no children were injured at a primary school in Galatsi after large pieces of plaster fell from the ceiling into a classroom—turning it into a debris-strewn scene. The incident occurred over the weekend in the school’s computer lab. A member of the Parent-Teacher Association denounced the building as old and in urgent need of maintenance work that has yet to be carried out. They also raised the alarm about safety inspections across all Greek schools, noting this is not an isolated case—similar incidents involving falling plaster and wall fragments have been reported elsewhere, including recently in Porto Rafti where a child was struck. “Luck saved us again—no child was hit because it happened on the weekend, outside school hours,” said Spyridon Hortis on ERTnews. “But we’ve repeatedly flagged serious structural issues to the Municipality. As educators, we’re not technicians—we rely on the Municipality and the state to conduct proper safety checks and ensure buildings are fit for use. This isn’t just our school’s problem; it reflects a nationwide failure to invest adequately in school infrastructure maintenance.” The Municipality has now begun urgent repairs to restore the classroom’s functionality shortly.
