G7 Threatens Russia With Sanctions Over Ukraine Ceasefire Proposal

The G7 has issued a stern message to Russia urging acceptance of the ceasefire proposal in Ukraine, warning of sanctions otherwise. Following intense discussions amid heightened tensions due to Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the G7 reaffirmed its unity today by threatening Russia with sanctions if it does not accept the ceasefire proposal that Ukraine has already greenlit. The member states of the Group of Seven major industrialized nations reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and right to exist, referencing Russian ‘aggression,’ a term previously avoided by the new U.S. administration. They also called on Russia to reciprocate by accepting the proposed truce lasting thirty days, which Ukraine agreed to earlier this week. Without compliance, new sanctions will be considered, warned the group of major economies, who managed to speak with one voice despite the charged atmosphere. Diplomats from the G7 met for three days in Charlevoix, Quebec, as the unity of the group (Germany, Canada, USA, France, Italy, UK, and Japan) has been shaken by Trump’s return to the White House, who has notably approached Vladimir Putin and engaged in trade disputes with close allies. The G7 emphasized the need for stable and reliable security mechanisms to prevent further aggression against Ukraine. While European countries have placed security guarantees at the forefront of sustainable peace efforts, the Republican president has downplayed their importance. Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly promised a ‘strong final statement,’ confirming the G7’s ability to demonstrate strong unity. ‘The ball is now in Russia’s court,’ she highlighted. ‘There are issues we disagree on, but there were many more we agreed on and could find common ground,’ said British counterpart David Lammy. Ukraine was the main topic of this multilateral summit, held shortly after Kyiv approved the American proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, over three years since the Russian invasion. Meanwhile, the G7 also urged the resumption of unrestricted humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza and the implementation of a permanent ceasefire.
