Leaders of the G7 nations — the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, and Canada — have united in support of Ukraine and agreed to impose stricter sanctions on Russia over its ongoing war. The decision was confirmed in the final communiqué issued at the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France.

Expanded Military and Energy Support

The statement pledges increased deliveries of long-range weapons and enhanced air defense capabilities to Ukraine’s armed forces as they continue to counter Russian aggression. It also highlights what it calls ‘new momentum’ and ‘Ukrainian progress’ on the battlefield over recent months.

According to the communiqué, leaders believe this is the ‘right moment’ to take additional measures against Moscow — a timing they link to the recently announced U.S.-Iran agreement, which includes provisions for opening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Beyond arms and ammunition, the G7 committed to energy assistance for Ukraine to help the country withstand the upcoming winter, despite repeated Russian attacks targeting power generation facilities and distribution infrastructure.

Leaders’ Statements Reflect Strategic Shift

French President Emmanuel Macron, host of the summit, described the gathering as a ‘moment of strategic awakening’ and posted a video on Instagram highlighting ‘victories’ in bolstering Ukraine’s defense.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the summit a ‘day of hope’ and pointed to the possibility of peace — citing former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comment that it is time for Russia to ‘reach a deal’ with Ukraine to end the conflict.
