French newspaper Le Monde leaves X because of Elon Musk

The French newspaper announced today (20/01/2025) that it would stop posting its contents on the platform X due to the and ‘intensive toxicity of conversations’ between users. “We will also increase our vigilance on many other platforms, particularly in TikTok and those of the Meta group, following Mark Zuckerberg’s alarming statements,” who has ideologically approached US President Donald Trump, Le Monde director Jerome Fenolio in the newspaper’s editorial on the decision to leave X due to Elon Musk. CORVERSE Musk, who bought twitter in 2022, transformed it “to an extension of his political action, a libertarianism that increasingly approaches the far right, into an instrument of pressure he wants to exert on his competitors or European social democratic governments,” he added. “This mix of ideology and commerce has increasingly hidden Le Monde as well as most other traditional media,” he stressed, stressing that over a year ago, the newspaper’s posts on the platform had been limited “to the minimum possible”. From now on, the suspension of its content on the platform will be discontinued for as long as the X works in this way. Fenolio recommends that its journalists do the same. It also expresses the hope that ‘the European Union will not capitulate in the definition of public debate, governed by rules, respects participants, the information they circulate and the views they feed’. Many French media (Uest France, Sud Ouest, Mediapart, La Voix du Nord) as well as other countries (The Guardian, La Vanguardia) have already stopped posting their contents on the X platform, due to Trump’s return to the White House. Musk, a close associate and economic supporter of the Republican, is expected to be appointed minister to his government.
