French MEP Calls on Americans to ‘Return the Statue of Liberty’

In a fiery speech during the closing session of the Place Publique movement’s conference, French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann addressed Americans who supported Donald Trump. “Return to us the Statue of Liberty,” he said, criticizing those who have chosen to side with tyrants and suppress scientific freedom. He emphasized that the statue was gifted by the French people as a symbol of friendship but seems to be disrespected now. Originally crafted by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, the monument was unveiled in 1886 to celebrate the centennial of American independence. Located on Liberty Island in New York, it has become an iconic symbol of the United States. Glucksmann further stated, “If you want to chase away your best researchers, those who made your country a global leader through innovation and inquiry, then we will welcome them.” His remarks also called for resistance against far-right movements globally, naming figures like Trump, Putin, and Marine Le Pen.
