Freddie Beleris: Resolution of ‘shut’ in Albania adopted by the European People’s Party at the initiative of the ND

Resolution on his case adopted by the European People’s Party in Bucharest on the initiative of the ND. As stressed in the resolution, what its authorities have done, in order to achieve a condemnation of the elected mayor of Himarra, would never happen in any EU state court. A strong message to Albania about the application of the rule of law sent the European People’s Party, on the occasion of the case of the elected mayor of Heimar, adopting a resolution on the initiative of the ND. Specifically, at the Conference of the ELK in Bucharest, the secretary of International Relations of the New Republic and MP of Serres Tasos Hadjivassiliou presented to the plenary an extraordinary resolution of the NW, which was passed and adopted by the European centre-right. The resolution mentions the grey points of the Beleri case and points out that after 10 months in prison, the Albanian court just yesterday (05.03.2024) sentenced him with a two-year sentence, without taking into account the confession of the chief witness of the case, who said he was paid by Albanian police to falsely accuse Beleri. Something that, as highlighted in the resolution, would never happen in any EU state court. It is also stressed in the resolution that Albania, as a candidate country in the EU, must respect the results of the elections, safeguard the right of citizens to a fair trial and protect the rights of the Greek minority. It is also noted that the Beleri case is not a bilateral issue but a European one, as it concerns the application of the rule of law and respect for the rights of the Greek minority. “In no EU country. could not an elected mayor charged with an insolvent indictment be imprisoned and not allowed to assume his duties,” the ND said when presenting the resolution.
