An 18-year-old suspect, Timothy Z., has been arrested and detained in France for allegedly planning knife attacks against women, proudly identifying himself as part of the misogynistic ‘incel’ movement. This marks the first case exclusively linked to the toxic online ideology known as ‘incel,’ short for ‘involuntary celibacy.’
The arrest took place near a high school in Saint-Étienne, a city in east-central France. The teenager was found carrying two knives and was subsequently detained in Paris late Monday (July 1, 2025). According to the French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT), the suspect is being charged with conspiracy to commit terrorist acts aimed at harming individuals.
Members of the incel movement often blame women for their lack of romantic or sexual success and harbor extreme resentment toward them. The movement has gained attention globally due to its role in radicalizing young men online and inspiring violent attacks in various countries.
Timothy Z., described as shy, slender, and boyish-looking, appeared before a judge who ordered his pre-trial detention. His lawyer, Maria Schnitzar, told AFP that she encountered ‘a suffering teenager, not a fighter ready for action.’
French authorities confirmed that they have opened a judicial investigation into the young man, who claims affiliation with the incel movement. They are also looking into potential links to terrorist activities related to the planning of crimes against people.
According to sources close to the case, the suspect, who aspires to become an engineer, had been watching videos on TikTok about toxic masculinity. This case represents the first time the PNAT has pursued legal action against someone who self-identifies solely as an incel.
The Netflix series ‘Adolescence’ recently highlighted the dangerous online influences affecting teenagers, including misogynistic ideologies. The show has prompted calls in both the UK and France to incorporate media literacy programs in schools to help students critically engage with such content.
