A new tragedy has shocked France, where extreme heat appears to have claimed the life of an 18-month-old child. The infant was found suffering from severe hyperthermia inside a car parked in the lot of the Timone University Hospital in Marseille.
The university confirmed the child’s death but did not specify the exact time of passing. The incident occurred on Tuesday amid a dangerous heatwave gripping much of the country. Firefighters were called just before 2 p.m. and rushed the baby to the pediatric emergency unit at the Timone Hospital. Despite medical efforts, doctors were unable to save the child.
According to reports by BFM TV, one of the parents reportedly forgot the toddler in the vehicle while heading to work on the university campus — leaving the infant trapped inside the car.
In a separate, equally devastating case, two young children — aged two and four — were found dead Monday inside their family’s car, parked in a residential parking area in Carpentras, in southern France.
