Fragile truce from today in Gaza between Israel and Hamas after 15 months of war

It is now in place (19.01.2025) between Israel and Hamas and the release of hostages after months of intense negotiations. At 8.30 a.m. the truce between Israel and Hamas will begin while some issues remain pending. Hamas has not yet given the names of 33 hostages expected to be released with Benjamin Netanyahu expressing his strong opposition. CORVERSE Under an agreement for today Hamas will leave three women and Israel will release 95 prisoners. Adjoining Hamas media broadcast at dawn that Israeli troops began to withdraw from Rafah areas, without however being confirmed by Israeli armed forces (IDF). A few hours before the start of the truce, concern caused statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel will not observe the ceasefire until it receives the list of 33 hostages pledged to release Hamas. At the same time Netanyahu warned that it was a “temporary ceasefire” and that Israel retains “the right to resume the war if necessary, with US support”. CORVERSE In accordance with the terms of the agreement reached shortly before the switch to the White House, during the “first phase” that will last six weeks the hostilities in the Gaza Strip will cease and 33 Hamas hostages will be released. In return Israel will release 737 Palestinian prisoners, as the Israeli Justice Ministry has announced. According to U.S. outgoing president Joe Biden, during the ‘first phase’ of the truce the Israeli forces are expected to withdraw from densely populated Gaza areas, as well as increase humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave. The Egyptian authorities spoke of “a daily entry of 600 trucks with humanitarian aid”, of which 50 will carry fuel. Negotiations on the second phase of the truce will begin on the 16th day of the first phase and are expected to include the release of all other hostages, permanent ceasefire and the full withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Palestinian enclave. The third phase will include the return of all dead hostages and the start of the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, supervised by Egypt, Qatar and the United Nations. “We will not proceed with the deal until we get the list of hostages released, as agreed. Israel will not tolerate violations of the agreement. Integrity is Hamas’ responsibility,” said an Israeli Prime Minister announcement. Hamas for its part invokes “technical reasons” for delaying the provision of names of hostages. According to the source, Hamas executives communicate “of course through envoys and it takes time to agree on the names and location of hostages”. “The list will only be released after Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar’s approval,” adds the source. And all this while U.S. elected president Donald Trump sent a clear message to Benjamin Netanyahu “to do what he must do” for the truce. In particular the elected President Donald Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “continue to do what needs to be done”, while stressing his desire to end the war between Israel and Hamas.
