Konstantinos Giatrakos, former Member of Parliament from the New Democracy (ND) party, passed away on Tuesday, July 1st, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Sparta in 1936, Giatrakos was a distinguished politician and economist with a career spanning decades. He first entered politics in 1974 with the Center Union but joined New Democracy in 1981. After a brief period with DIANA in 1985, he returned to ND in 1987 and was appointed parliamentary spokesman for the party in 1990.
Giatrakos studied economics at the Universities of Paris, Harvard, and MIT, and was known for his academic rigor and dedication to public service. In 1979, he served as Greece’s permanent representative to international organizations in Washington before returning to domestic politics. He was elected as an MP for Laconia multiple times between 1981 and 1993 and served as Deputy Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis.
New Democracy released a statement mourning his passing: ‘The ND family bids farewell with sorrow to former MP of Laconia, Konstantinos Giatrakos. He was born in 1936 in Sparta, studied economics abroad, and served his country with integrity.’
Nikitas Kaklamantis, President of the Hellenic Parliament, also expressed his condolences via Facebook, praising Giatrakos’ academic background and commitment to his constituents in Laconia.
