in

A flash flood struck the village of Veleisiotes Domokou on Monday, March 31, 2025, around 5:30-6:00 PM. Strong storms hit the area in Phthiotis, causing a stream to burst its banks and flow through the village, flooding two houses. According to local reports from Lamiareport, a couple was trapped inside one house, while an 85-year-old woman was evacuated by neighbors at the last moment. Rescue teams, including a JCB from Domokou Municipality with Deputy Mayors George Lelentzi and Niko Kalimeri, along with firefighters from Domokou, arrived quickly but no rescue operation was needed as water levels receded. The President of the village, Panteli Vasilaakos, stated that debris from construction materials caused blockages near the train bridge, altering the stream’s natural flow and endangering not only the village but also the train infrastructure. The incident highlights the need for better flood management systems. One resident recounted her harrowing experience, describing how rapidly the water surrounded their home. Fortunately, the situation resolved itself before emergency services had to intervene. Two areas in Phthiotis, Amphikleia and Koromilia Domokou, recorded some of the highest rainfall amounts, with Amphikleia reaching 128 mm/h at 5:00 PM.
