Five Italians Die in Underwater Cave Tragedy in the Maldives

A diving expedition by five Italian tourists in the Maldives ended in tragedy when all lost their lives while exploring an underwater cave system at a depth of 60 meters. The group entered the water early Thursday morning, May 14, 2026, for what was intended as a scientific and exploratory dive — but failed to resurface by midday, prompting authorities to launch a search and rescue operation.

Victims Identified

According to Italian media reports, including Il Messaggero and Daily Mail, the victims were:

  • Monica Montefalcone, 51, a university lecturer in Ecology at the University of Genoa, known for her research on marine ecosystems, climate change impacts, and underwater mapping;
  • Georgia Somacal, 20, Montefalcone’s daughter and a biomedical engineering student;
  • Federico Guaglietti, 30, a recent graduate of the University of Genoa who had completed his thesis under Montefalcone’s supervision on biodiversity and environmental conditions in the Maldivian atolls;
  • Muriel Odénino, 31, a researcher from the University of Turin currently working at the University of Genoa and a close collaborator of Montefalcone; and
  • Gianluca Benedetti, a certified dive instructor who accompanied the group.

Montefalcone and Odénino were colleagues at the University of Genoa. Montefalcone was also a familiar face on Italian television, frequently appearing as an expert on marine conservation and ocean science.

Rescue Efforts Hampered by Weather

So far, only one body has been recovered. Authorities believe the remaining four are trapped deeper inside the cave system, which extends over 200 meters. Ongoing adverse weather conditions — including strong currents and poor visibility — have suspended recovery operations. A yellow alert for hazardous weather has been issued for the area.

Investigation Underway

Preliminary theories point to several possible causes: oxygen mixture issues in air tanks, sudden underwater currents, disorientation within the cave, or violations of local diving regulations. Local authorities permit dives in the area only up to 30 meters — yet the group descended to 60 meters.

Official Confirmation

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the deaths in an official statement: “Following an accident during a dive, five Italians lost their lives in Vaavu Atoll, Maldives.”
