A health alert has been issued in France following the confirmation of the country’s first Ebola case — a physician who returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where an ongoing outbreak is spreading. The patient has been placed in isolation, and French health authorities have launched contact tracing, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Health.

Confirmed Case in Metropolitan France

The French Ministry of Health confirmed in a press release that it has identified the nation’s first positive case of Ebola virus disease on its national territory. In clarifications provided to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the ministry specified that the case was detected in metropolitan France — meaning mainland France, not its overseas territories.

“The situation is being closely monitored by the Prime Minister,” said a spokesperson for Matignon, the official residence and office of the French Prime Minister.

Low Risk for General Public in Europe

Authorities emphasized that the risk to the general population across Europe remains low. Meanwhile, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to escalate: according to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1,000 people have been infected and 267 deaths reported — the highest number of confirmed cases recorded within the first month of any previous Ebola outbreak.
