City – ghost reminds of , which is faced with one of the most destructive in California History. The images still coming from Los Angeles remind horror film, with experts attempting to give the first answers to the causes that caused the huge destruction from the passage of the fire. CORVERSE For winds too strong that reached 160 km an hour, Professor of Natural Disasters, Kostas Panolakis spoke. These winds, as he explained, “are called Diablo Winds, or devils. And they’re called devils because they come down the ravines and change directions. This is very difficult to deal with,” he said, speaking to ERT. In fact, referring to the causes of the huge disaster he noted that wind speed was twice as high as that in the Eye. “They are hurricane wind speeds or small cyclone. Hurricanes are ashore, cyclones are at sea, Cyclones in general may have higher speeds at sea, but a hurricane can reach speeds of 160 – 180 km. Of course it didn’t have, we didn’t have circular movement, we had winds coming down from the mountains, but they were changing direction. And of course when the fire starts it makes its own microscale and the Diablo Winds become even less predictable,” he explained. Another important factor, he said, is the fact that homes are not resistant. “The houses since they are surrounded—and I’ve been to several of these houses in Pacific Palisades have almost tropical vegetation which is around. So you have too much vegetation, you have houses that many of them do not mean that because they are too expensive, that they are also durable. They may have very strange structures, wooden platforms, wooden roofs, their tiles may not be resistant, there are tiles which are more durable than others. This is the other piece,” he said.
