Fire Rages in Chania: Battle Against Flames Intensifies – Firefighting Forces Reinforced

The battle against the fire that broke out on Thursday morning (March 13, 2025) continues in the Kalamitsi-Amygdali area of Apokoronas. According to the latest updates, firefighting forces have been reinforced significantly to tackle the blaze in the Apokoronas region of Chania. Specifically, 74 firefighters are working in three ground teams with 25 vehicles, and a helicopter has also been mobilized for the operation. Strong winds in the area are complicating firefighting efforts. Earlier, a precautionary message was sent via the emergency line 112 to residents advising them to remain alert and follow official instructions. As stated by the mayor of Apokoronas, Charalambos Koukianakis, to zarpanews.gr, “it is clear to anyone familiar with the geographical location and the starting point of the fire that it is not accidental.” He added, “the fire started near the old national road with southern winds. The location is very challenging because immediately after the fire’s origin, there is a steep slope, a mountainous area covered with bushes, trees, and dense forest, inaccessible to ground forces. Fortunately, the helicopter stationed in Heraklion since yesterday came immediately and has already made over ten water drops. Strong firefighting forces from all over Crete arrived quickly, along with the police, ensuring significant mobilization from the first moment.”
