A major wildfire broke out on Wednesday, 8 July, in the agricultural-forestry area of Argirovrysi, near Larissa in central Greece. The fire remains active and poses no immediate threat to homes or critical infrastructure, but firefighting teams have been reinforced and are engaged in a challenging effort to contain its spread.
Large-Scale Response Underway
Currently, 90 firefighters are on site with 20 vehicles. Five ground units from the 10th Emergency Response Unit (EMODE) are operating on foot, while five aircraft and two helicopters conduct water-dropping operations from the air. Water tankers from local municipal authorities are also assisting in the operation.
Investigation Launched
A special investigative team from the Larissa Arson Crimes Division has arrived at the scene to determine the cause of the blaze.
Local Leadership Present
Larissa Mayor Thanasis Mamakos is on-site and confirmed that residential areas are not currently at risk. However, he emphasized that strong and unpredictable winds — frequently shifting direction — are significantly hampering firefighting efforts.
