A dire situation is unfolding across France and Spain, where massive wildfires continue to rage with no end in sight. Thousands of residents have been evacuated as flames advance toward major urban centers.
Bordeaux on Alert Amid Unprecedented Blazes
A major wildfire that broke out Wednesday in Gironde — a department in southwestern France — is now threatening the metropolitan area of Bordeaux. By Friday evening, regional authorities announced the precautionary evacuation of seven communes. The order affects residents of Saint-Médard-en-Jalles (33,000), Leognan (11,400), Saint-Jean-d’Illac (9,600), Martignas-sur-Jalle (8,000), and Saint-Aubin-de-Médoc (7,800). Parts of Mérignac (78,000) and Eysines (24,800) are also impacted.
The fire has already consumed approximately 19,000 hectares — nearly 190,000 square meters — and destroyed around 100 buildings over the past three days. French President Emmanuel Macron has called on the military to provide maximum support to Civil Protection forces, warning that the scale of the fires in southwestern France is ‘unprecedented.’
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed that an additional 500 soldiers will be deployed to assist firefighters in the region following an emergency cabinet meeting. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated that more than 140,000 people have been evacuated nationwide due to the blazes.
Wildlife and Habitats Devastated
Wildlife is among the earliest victims of the inferno. In the Lège-Cap-Ferret fire north of Arcachon Bay, footage circulated online showing a deer narrowly escaping the flames before being doused by firefighters. Over 22,000 hectares have already been ravaged in that area alone. Videos shared widely show animals fleeing their natural habitats — some fatally caught in the blaze, others surviving only through desperate escape.
Madrid Region Overwhelmed
In Spain, the situation near Madrid remains critical. Around 63,000 people have either been evacuated or ordered to shelter in place as fires spread rapidly across the region. Authorities report that containment efforts have failed, and the blazes remain out of control.
