A wildfire broke out on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, near the Afidnes toll station on the Athens–Lamia national highway, in the lane heading toward Lamia.
Emergency Response Underway
Firefighters and aerial units are currently operating at the site. According to ERTNEWS, 65 firefighters are involved, including three infantry teams from the 1st Mobile Unit of the Hellenic Fire Service (EMODE), volunteers, and 20 vehicles. From the air, two aircraft and one helicopter are assisting the operation.
Water tankers from the municipality of Oropos are also supporting the Hellenic Fire Service’s efforts.
High-Risk Conditions and Investigation Launched
The area is currently under extreme fire danger — Level 5 (emergency alert status). In parallel, the Athens Arson Investigation Team has been dispatched to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
