Fire Incident at Ambelokipoi Metro Station: Smoke from Escalators

in

A disturbance occurred shortly after 6 PM on Tuesday (April 29, 2025) at the Ambelokipoi metro station when citizens reported smoke coming from the escalators. Firefighters rushed to the scene with two vehicles and confirmed that smoke was indeed emanating from the escalator near the Soutsou entrance of the Ambelokipoi metro station. Actions were immediately taken to locate the source of the fire, which appeared to be deep within the escalator mechanism. Cooperation with the station’s security personnel was necessary, as they dismantled specific parts of the escalator to extinguish the flames. One scenario being investigated is that a discarded cigarette by a passerby or passenger may have caused the fire or damage. During the incident, station staff followed protocol by closing access through the affected entrance without disrupting metro operations. Passengers were directed to use the opposite entrance on Alexandras Avenue or the elevator.
