A Sunday morning train journey from Larissa to Athens turned into a lengthy ordeal for dozens of passengers on July 12, 2026. A fire broke out in one of the carriages, forcing authorities to cancel the rail service and arrange alternative transport by bus.

Delayed Departure, Extended Wait

The train was scheduled to depart Larissa Station at 7:30 a.m., but passengers already onboard found themselves stranded at the station. By 10:30 a.m.—the time the train should have already arrived at Athens’ Larissis Station—passengers were still waiting in Larissa. At that point, officials informed them that due to the fire, they would be transferred to Athens by bus.

Further Delays Compound Frustration

Yet even the bus replacement failed to materialize promptly: as of 4:30 p.m., the designated bus had still not arrived at Larissa Station. In total, passengers endured approximately nine hours of delays and transit—arriving in Athens six hours later than the originally scheduled arrival time.
