Amid the charred remains of a home in Liti, a village in Oreokastro near Thessaloniki, officers from Greece’s Special Violent Crime Squad (OPKE) rescued one of the family’s dogs — a poignant moment following a devastating fire that claimed two lives just days earlier.

The blaze, which broke out last Tuesday, 30 June 2026, killed a 66-year-old father and his 12-year-old son. The boy was found inside a closet. Their wife and mother was critically injured and rushed to hospital.

The family kept four dogs at their home. Two perished in the fire; the other two were found alive. Despite extremely hazardous conditions at the scene — including structural instability and lingering smoke — OPKE officers managed to locate and safely extract both surviving animals, relocating them to a secure location.
