The mayor of Mandres–Eidyllia, Armodios Drikos, described the fire that broke out in Oinoi, emphasizing that it ignited under exceptionally difficult weather conditions near the old Athens–Thebes national road. Speaking to ERT News, he said the blaze erupted approximately 20 meters from the first residential buildings in Oinoi. However, strong winds pushed the fire toward a mountainous and forested area—away from the settlement itself.
Swift Response Averted Damage to Homes
According to the mayor, the immediate mobilization of the Hellenic Fire Service, volunteers, and aerial firefighting units prevented any threat to homes located close to the fire’s origin point. Ground and aerial forces continue active suppression operations, while the municipal civil protection mechanism has been fully activated.
Seven Homes Evacuated in Kassandra
As a precautionary measure—and primarily due to dense smoke affecting air quality—seven residences in the Kassandra area were evacuated to safeguard public health.
Investigation Underway
Regarding the possible cause of the fire, Mayor Drikos revealed that investigators are examining witness accounts suggesting an object was thrown from a passing vehicle shortly before the fire ignited. The Fire Service’s investigative unit, working alongside the Hellenic Police (EL.AS.), is collecting testimonies and reviewing footage from security cameras to verify these reports.
“I want to believe that in 2026, no one would throw a cigarette—or anything else—from their car,” the mayor stated emphatically.
