Fire in Marathon: Damage to House, Caravan and Vehicle Destroyed – ‘Spread from Uncleaned Plots’

A wildfire broke out in Marathon around noon on Wednesday (2.7.25), sparking widespread concern among residents and authorities as Attica was under an orange alert for fires. The blaze, which started from dry reeds and low vegetation near homes and businesses, reached nearby yards, causing damage to a country house where the fence was completely destroyed. In an adjacent lot, a caravan was consumed by flames, while a car was also burned beyond repair. Minor material damages were recorded in other areas of the region.

The fire department responded swiftly with 56 firefighters, 18 vehicles, two ground teams, and three helicopters battling the flames. Although the fire dangerously approached Schinias, it was eventually contained without spreading uncontrollably. As a precautionary measure, an alert sent via the 112 network advised residents to move towards Nea Makri.

Local residents have criticized the presence of neglected plots that contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. They claim that many properties had either never been cleared or had leftover debris after cleaning, increasing the amount of flammable material.

‘Very characteristic is the testimony of a local resident who told newsit.gr: “The fire spread from uncleaned plots or plots that had been cleaned but still had leftover materials,”’ the report stated. ‘There are also plots that have never been cleaned at all.’

While the situation has visibly improved, the incident has not yet been officially closed. Firefighting forces remain on standby as water drops and aerial monitoring continue to prevent potential flare-ups. Traffic police have implemented road adjustments on Poseidonos Avenue, including partial traffic interruptions at specific points.

The Marathon fire once again highlights the critical need for prevention and responsibility in managing land plots and surrounding areas, especially during high-risk periods.
