A shocking video obtained by Newsit.gr captures the harrowing moment a 75-year-old woman leapt from her balcony to escape a fast-spreading fire in her apartment in Kallithea, a central Athens suburb. She and her 80-year-old husband were inside their two-storey home when the blaze broke out on the first floor shortly after 4:00 p.m.
Desperate Escape
Trapped on the balcony as smoke filled the apartment, the woman jumped — landing safely in the arms of bystanders who had gathered below and urged her to jump to save her life. Her husband managed to escape independently through the garage door.
Hospitalized After Rescue
Both were rushed to hospital by EKAB ambulances. The man sustained a leg injury; the woman was treated for respiratory distress.
Large-Scale Response Underway
The fire, which broke out in a residential building in Kallithea, Attica, prompted a major emergency response. According to the Hellenic Fire Service, 24 firefighters and seven vehicles — including a specialized aerial platform — are working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the ground floor or neighbouring buildings.
Arson Investigation Launched
The Attica Arson Investigation Unit has deployed to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
