Dramatic scenes unfolded in Kallithea, a central Athens suburb, when a fire broke out at a two-storey residential building on Sunday, 28 June 2026. A 75-year-old woman and her 80-year-old husband were inside — and narrowly escaped. With flames rapidly spreading, the woman jumped from the balcony to save her life.
A Delivery Worker’s Quick Action Saved Her Life
Her rescuer was a delivery rider who happened to pass by, saw smoke rising, and heard her cries of “I’m burning — help me!” He abandoned his moped, rushed over, and shouted, “Jump! Jump!” — catching her in his arms as she leapt.
“I saw smoke coming out, and the grandmother was screaming ‘Help! Help!’ I dropped my bike and told her to jump — then caught her in my hands,” he recounted, adding that his only wish was for the elderly woman to recover fully.
Injuries and Aftermath
The woman sustained minor burns on her arm, suffered respiratory distress — under medical evaluation for possible smoke inhalation — and lost part of her hair to the fire. Neighbours rushed to assist, offering her a wet towel to wipe her face, as captured in footage obtained by newsit.gr.
Her husband reportedly left the scene without helping her and refused hospital transport. Meanwhile, the delivery worker injured himself during the rescue and, according to initial reports, suffered a fractured hand.
Family in Shock
The woman’s daughter was visibly shaken upon learning what had happened. Emergency responders from EKAB (National Centre for Direct Aid) arrived quickly, stabilising and calming the survivor on-site.
Emotion ran high when the couple’s son arrived — holding the family’s small dog — and broke down in tears, overwhelmed by relief and fear. A neighbour gently informed him that his parents had already been taken to hospital.
Authorities have deployed significant firefighting resources to contain the blaze. The Attica Arson Investigation Unit has also arrived at the scene to determine its cause.
