Chaos erupted in Kallithea, a central Athens suburb, after a fire broke out in a two-storey residential building at the intersection of Aristeidou and Agion Panton streets on Sunday afternoon (28/06/2026). A video obtained by newsit.gr captures the moment of explosion on the building’s first floor — the incident that triggered the major blaze — as well as the arrival of the first fire service units.
Two elderly people were injured in the fire. According to the Hellenic Fire Service, a man aged 80 sustained a leg injury, while a 75-year-old woman suffered respiratory distress. Both were transported by EKAB ambulances to hospital for urgent medical care.
The 75-year-old woman — reportedly the owner of the property — jumped from the first floor to escape the flames. Local residents who had gathered at the scene managed to catch and hold her, preventing more serious injury.
The fire broke out shortly after 4:00 p.m. on the first floor of the two-storey house. Firefighters worked urgently to contain the flames and prevent their spread to the ground floor and neighbouring homes.
A total of 24 firefighters responded using seven vehicles, including a specialised aerial ladder platform. In parallel, a team from the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes (D.A.E.E.) was dispatched to investigate the cause of the blaze.
