It broke out at noon on Saturday (24.08.2024) in a difficult area of Lofoupoli and has marked an alarm to the fire department. The fire burns grass and agricultural crops with olive groves just outside the city of Heraklion. Because the area is very close to the urban fabric of Heraklion there has been a direct mobilisation and efforts to extinguish are under way. These efforts involve strong forces of fire department as well as available aerial means. In particular, ten fire trucks have been transported with 41 firefighters. Two helicopters have also been lifted, which do several water dumps. The strong winds that are blowing in the area make it difficult for firefighting efforts and create a suffocating atmosphere. The mayor of Heraklion, Alexis Kalokerinos and other municipal actors, has also rushed to the point.
