A 52-year-old man of Albanian origin has been arrested as the main suspect responsible for the large fire that broke out yesterday (04.07.2025) in southern Evia. Authorities proceeded with the arrest following a thorough investigation into the cause of the blaze. According to reports, the suspect was carrying out work using a grass cutter, from which sparks emerged and triggered the fire. The suspect fled to Athens and spent the night at his son’s house, fearing public outrage and an immediate legal procedure, but was later apprehended by the Forestry Service. Initially, his wife confessed during questioning in Aliveri, and later the man himself admitted to the act. Firefighting forces remain on high alert as strong winds are blowing in the area, raising concerns over possible re-ignition. Reinforcements arrived from Lamia, Patras, Tripoli, Central Greece, and Thessaly. Latest reports confirm there is no longer an active front of the wildfire in the region.
