Fire Contained in Nea Kerasia, Thessaloniki — Two Helicopters Deployed

A wildfire broke out in Nea Kerasia, a residential area within the Thermi municipality near Thessaloniki, prompting an emergency response at midday on Monday, 13 July 2026. The fire burned through low vegetation in close proximity to scattered homes, triggering an immediate mobilisation by the Hellenic Fire Service.

Containment Achieved Within 45 Minutes

Within approximately 45 minutes, firefighters successfully contained the blaze. A total of 25 firefighters were deployed, including one team from the 2nd Mobile Unit for Wildfire Response (2nd EMODE), supported by seven vehicles and two helicopters for aerial firefighting.

Local Support and Monitoring

The Thermi municipality also provided auxiliary support with municipal water tankers. Volunteers and local authorities assisted on the ground. Throughout the operation, the National Emergency Operations Centre (ESKEDIK) monitored the situation in real time using drone footage equipped with both visual and thermal imaging.

Investigation Underway

The Thessaloniki Arson Investigation Team has been dispatched to the site to determine the cause of the fire.
