A wildfire broke out today (29 June 2026) around 3:00 p.m. in an agricultural-forestry area near Varda, a village in the Ilia regional unit of western Greece. The fire reportedly started in reed beds near the settlement of Komis and spread toward greenhouse cultivation zones, moving in the direction of Psari.

Emergency Response Underway

To combat the blaze, authorities deployed 36 firefighters with nine vehicles, two ground teams from the 6th and 18th Emergency Response Units (EMODE), and three aircraft. Additional support is being provided by municipal water tankers and construction machinery.

Monitoring and Conditions

The National Crisis Management and Coordination Centre (ESKEDIK) is continuously monitoring the situation via drone equipped with both optical and thermal imaging. Strong winds are currently blowing across the area, and the fire remains largely confined to farmland. As of now, no homes or critical infrastructure are under threat.

Investigation Launched

The Ilia Arson Investigation Unit has arrived on site to determine the cause of the fire.
