A fire broke out on Sunday, 28 June 2026, in a two-storey building in Kallithea, a municipality in Athens, Attica. The blaze erupted at the intersection of Aristeidou and Agion Panton streets. Twenty-four firefighters responded using seven vehicles—including a specialized aerial platform truck—to tackle the flames.
Woman Jumps from Balcony, Rescued by Bystander
One woman jumped from a balcony to escape the rapidly spreading fire. According to eyewitness accounts reported by newsit.gr, a delivery worker witnessed her on the balcony as smoke engulfed the building. He shouted for her to jump—and caught her mid-air with his bare hands. ‘I saw smoke rising and heard her shouting “Help! Help!” I dropped my motorcycle and yelled, “Jump, jump!”—and caught her in my arms,’ he recounted.
The woman was taken to the Red Cross Hospital, where she is reported to be in stable condition. A man also managed to escape the building via the rear garage door and survived unharmed.
Injuries and Evacuation Efforts
Two people sustained smoke inhalation injuries and were transported by ambulance—one to the Red Cross Hospital and the other to Sotiria Hospital.
Initial reports suggest the fire likely originated in the lower part of the building, possibly from an aging electrical distribution board. Authorities are still investigating whether anyone remains trapped inside.
Traffic Disruptions
As a result of the incident, vehicle traffic has been suspended on several nearby streets: on Aristeidou Street from its junction with Charokopou Street; on Agion Panton Street from its intersection with Theseos Street; and on Grypari Street near its crossing with Menelaou Street.
