A wildfire broke out this afternoon (30 June 2026) around 2:30 p.m. in an agricultural area near Derveni, within the municipality of Oraiokastro in Thessaloniki. At 3:40 p.m., Greece’s emergency number 112 issued an alert to local residents, urging them to remain on standby and follow official instructions.

Fire Spreads Through Low Vegetation

The blaze is burning dry grass and cereal crops across a low-vegetation farmland in Derveni. Thick smoke is visible from a distance, though no residential areas are currently under threat.

Large-Scale Response Underway

According to thestival.gr, firefighting forces have been reinforced at the scene. Currently, 39 firefighters are operating on-site, supported by one infantry team from the 2nd Emergency Response Unit (EMODE), 11 fire engines, and volunteer personnel. Two helicopters and three fixed-wing aircraft are assisting with aerial water drops.

Strong winds are hampering ground operations, but authorities confirm that no inhabited areas are at immediate risk.

In its alert message, the 112 emergency service advised residents: “Remain on standby and follow the instructions of the authorities.”
