A major fire broke out early Thursday morning (9 July 2026) in Aspropyrgos, a western suburb of Athens, prompting an immediate response from the Hellenic Fire Service. The emergency number 112 issued an urgent alert urging residents to evacuate the area, particularly those near Megaridos Street.

Location and Initial Response

According to the Fire Service, the blaze erupted at the intersection of Megaridos and Chios Streets in Aspropyrgos. It remains unclear whether the fire started in an auto parts shop or a scrap metal yard. Eyewitnesses reported smoke appearing shortly after 7:35 a.m., followed by an explosion about 15 minutes later — generating intense thermal output.

Health Impact and Medical Response

The National Centre for Emergency Care (EKAB) confirmed that two people were transported to Thriasio General Hospital: a man with burns to his extremities in stable condition, and a woman suffering from respiratory distress.

Hazardous Conditions

The site is reported to contain a propane-filled tanker truck and various flammable materials, contributing to a severe fire-thermal load. Smoke from the blaze was visible as far as central Athens.

Emergency Operations

Firefighting efforts involve 75 firefighters operating 20 vehicles, including four specialized units: two aerial ladder trucks, one refinery-specific aerial platform, and one mobile air replenishment unit. A helicopter is also supporting operations from the air. Municipal water tankers from the Aspropyrgos municipality are assisting on the ground.

Traffic Restrictions

The Hellenic Police have imposed traffic restrictions in the area: road access is closed on Megaridos Street between Agiou Georgiou Street and NATO Avenue; on Agiou Georgiou Street, traffic toward Megaridos Street is halted from its junction with Chios Street; and on Chios Street, closures apply from its intersection with Agiou Georgiou Street.
