Finland: Broken by ‘unknown cause’ submarine communications cable near Nord Stream gas pipelines

In particular, the competent authorities in Finland have stated that investigations have begun on the causes and conditions under which damage to the submarine cable connected to Germany has been caused, as state service and data provider Cinia stressed. In fact, Cinia added that the error was detected today on Monday, November 18, 2024, on the C-Lion1 cable, extending over 1,200 km long and linking Helsinki to the port of Rostok in northern Germany. The state company clarified that Finland’s international data and telecommunications connections are safe, as they take place through alternative routes and channels. It is noted that the CLion-1 submarine cable was launched in 2016 and is the only cable of this kind that connects Finland to continental Europe. Finnish media pointed out that the cable’s route to Germany extends near the two NordStream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany currently not operating.
