Final ‘No’ from KAS: Giorgos Lanthimos Cannot Film at the Acropolis

The Central Archaeological Council (KAS) has issued a final rejection of renowned filmmaker Giorgos Lanthimos’s request to shoot scenes for his movie ‘Bugonia’ at the Acropolis. According to documents published on the Transparency Portal, the proposed scenes were deemed incompatible with the values and symbolism of the monument, particularly the Parthenon, as a world cultural heritage site. The decision explicitly states: “The application by Either Or Productions for filming permission in the archaeological area of the Acropolis on April 10, 2025, is not approved because the scenes intended for filming conflict with the symbols and values projected by the Acropolis and especially the Parthenon, as a universal monument of world heritage.” Alternative locations such as the Hill of Pnyx or Philopappos are suggested for consideration in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens. Based on the science fiction comedy ‘Save the Green Planet!’, ‘Bugonia’ features a script by Will Tracy and is directed by the Emmy-winning director. The film stars Emma Stone and Jessie Plemons.
