Cypriot Member of the European Parliament, Fidias Panayiotou, has once again ignited widespread anger and controversy after conducting an interview with Ersin Tatar, the leader of the unrecognized Turkish Cypriot regime in the occupied northern part of the island. The move has been condemned by political parties, officials, and citizens alike, who accuse Panayiotou of legitimizing the occupation and violating international law.
Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that Panayiotou’s actions are being exploited by the occupying regime and violate United Nations Security Council resolutions. He emphasized that elected officials must act responsibly, especially given the sensitive nature of the Cyprus issue on a national level.
Political parties such as DIKO, EDEK, and DHIPA have all issued strong statements condemning the interview. DIKO accused Panayiotou of becoming a pawn in Turkish propaganda, while EDEK called his actions a violation of national dignity, urging him to resign if he fails to understand his role as a representative of the Republic of Cyprus. DHIPA stressed that the act grants legitimacy to the illegal entity in the occupied territories, calling it a serious institutional misstep.
The Government Spokesman further noted that while the MEP might claim personal intent or ignorance, his actions inadvertently serve the propaganda agenda of the illegal regime. He reminded all political figures that public actions carry political weight and must be carried out with full awareness, particularly concerning national matters like the Cyprus issue.
Panayiotou’s decision to conduct the interview at the so-called ‘presidential palace’ in the occupied north has drawn particular criticism, as it symbolically elevates the status of the unrecognized administration. This comes amid ongoing efforts to convene a multilateral conference in July aimed at resolving the decades-old Cyprus conflict.
Critics argue that Panayiotou has crossed a line, moving beyond journalism into actions that serve foreign interests and undermine Cyprus’ internationally recognized sovereignty. His behavior is seen as not only disrespectful to those who suffered from the Turkish invasion but also as damaging to Cyprus’ diplomatic standing.
Calls for Panayiotou to reconsider his actions and acknowledge the gravity of his position continue to grow, as political leaders stress the importance of unity and responsibility when dealing with issues of national significance.
